Selection Process

BWF utilizes an external, interdisciplinary advisory committee composed of distinguished scientists to review all proposals, select candidates, interview finalists, and make recommendations for awards to the BWF Board of Directors.

Selection will be based on the creativity of the proposal and its potential to lead to significant innovation in regulatory science, as well as on the appropriateness of the environment in which the project is to be conducted, and its potential impact on the careers of investigators. The translation of possible results of the research to improving the regulatory process will be an important consideration in the selection process.

Selected proposals must meet the eligibility requirements. BWF does not provide critiques of unfunded proposals.

Awards will be made in a two-stage process.  Applicants will submit a preproposal and from those the advisory committee will select those invited to submit full proposals. From those full proposals, at least five (5) grants will be awarded. These grants will provide up to $500,000 over a five-year period and are expected to begin in early fall of 2014.
