Technological Advances in Reproductive Biology Summer Science Program
Program
The Technological Advances in Reproductive Biology program provides twenty North Carolina high school students per summer with an intense, two-week residential camp focused on reproductive physiology. With media attention focusing on the use of embryos for stem cell research, in-vitro fertilization and cloning, many questions arise from a technological and ethical standpoint. Do we really understand how reproductive processes work? As we hear about babies developing from test-tubes and Dolly the sheep is cloned, many questions remain unanswered. This program attempts to address the science behind reproductive technologies by first educating basic reproductive physiology, and secondly looking at technological applications to animals and humans. Areas addressed begin with basic anatomy, the egg/sperm interaction, pregnancy, labor, genetic defects that effect reproductive organs, and biotechnology in reproductive medicine. Students learn reproductive physiology from a comparative standpoint focusing on humans and domestic animals. Students apply their new knowledge by participating in a research project in embryology and application of new biotechnology to living animals.
