Scientifica: DPS Nurturing Future Scientists
Program
Scientifica: DPS Nurturing Future Scientists is a science research program that provides student scholars with rich, long-term, and world class experiences with mentors and accomplished scientists. Scientifica’s goals begin in the eighth grade with building a critical mass of scientific excellence by improving students’ ability to think analytically through engagement in the scientific process. At least 60 students will be added each year, with the goal of 174 students by the end of the project. During the year, they will work in groups with their undergraduate mentors to design research projects. Throughout their high school career, scholars mold and extend projects on a more individual basis and will be guided to appropriate competitions and showcases. Another of Scientifica’s goals is to cultivate student passion for science through laboratory experiences with bench researchers. Scholars are involved in regular seminars during the school year to collaborate with their mentors and research scientists, as well as develop their research projects. In the summer, scholars participate in institutes during which they interact with an array of scientists to discover the variety of science fields and the careers into which they may wish to enter. When possible, scholars are guided to existing high-quality science programs for bench and field experiences. For those who do not fit the existing programs, opportunities are provided through district partnerships. Scientifica’s third goal is to enhance student understanding of the pathway to and the breadth of science careers. Scholars benefit from the knowledge of their undergraduate mentors through direct interaction and guidance.
