Adventure de Ciencia: Connecting science content to our world!
Program
The Adventure de Ciencia is an inquiry and discovery-based learning project for Hispanic students in grades three to six. Selected students will attend a summer science academic experience at school for three weeks. They will engage in hands-on science activities, experiences in the field, and exposure to the science profession as their teachers integrate critical mathematics, writing, and reading skills. Students will study life sciences, earth sciences, and physical sciences. In earth science, students will identify rock and mineral samples, use CBL probes to collect and graph atmospheric data, and make weather predictions. In physical science, students will engage in building simple machinery, measure mechanical advantage, participate in an on-line roller coaster web-quest, and explore differences in series and parallel circuits. In the life sciences, students will engage in water quality studies, collect sample stream macroinvertibrates, and carry out habitat experiments using sow bugs, mill worms to demonstrate the principles of biotic sampling. Parents, students, and teachers will participate in the attitudinal and academic program assessment. Students will be selected based on their participation in the English Language Learner program at Catawba County Schools, standardized and norm-referenced skills exams, and teacher recommendations.
