West Marion Elementary School

Unlocking The Mysteries! Guiding students to look at the world as a science experiment.

Program

Unlocking the Mysteries is a program that allows K-6 students to conduct science experiments, explorations and investigations through environmental and physical science.  The goals of the project are to enhance student knowledge of core science materials and develop an understanding of scientific concepts through their own experiences.  Students think about exploring science as a career or lifelong study.  The program will help students develop critical thinking skills through inquiry-based lessons in afterschool clubs and field trips. The program will focus on students who express an interest in science especially those who are underrepresented in advanced science and mathematics classes. These include AIG, students with disabilities, girls, and English as a Second Language students.  Students should demonstrate an understanding of scientific concepts and that knowledge to broaden and deepen throughout their elementary school years.  Students will be empowered to take higher level science and mathematics classes and to pursue careers in these areas.  Student success will be gauged by state assessment scores.
