Cherokee MedCaT Academy Medical Career and Technology: Enriched Student Experiences in Health Careers

Program Description

MedCaT Academy offers a summer youth program with follow-up modules for middle school and high school students and teachers throughout the school year. MedCaT is a culturally-based health sciences initiative serving Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and Appalachian students in middle schools and high schools in partnership with the Center for Native Health. The need for a culturally-based health sciences enrichment initiative was identified due to a major concern in the community about the future of the health care workforce.

In the summer of 2010, MedCaT brought 25 Western North Carolina high school students and five high school teachers to the Wake Forest University campus in Winston-Salem. The goals of the program are to: provide students with culturally-based science programs in a university setting, using Problem-Based Learning (PBL) methodology; familiarize students with career opportunities in health care and biotechnology; and prepare students for science enrichment activities through follow-up sessions during the school year.
