Special Initiatives

As part of Burroughs Wellcome Fund’s expanding commitment to science education, we are partnering with various organizations by providing grants and staff support to further the development of an infrastructure to improve science, mathematics, and technology education across North Carolina. The following is a listing of some of the educational initiatives created with BWF grants.

N.C. Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center

  • New nonprofit established in 2003
  • Purpose is to systematically improve performance in science, mathematics, and technology pre-K-12 education for all children in North Carolina
  • Established Teacher Link Program to connect scientists to teachers
  • Coordinating Leadership in Science Education Reform Institutes with NSRC
  • Supported development of computational chemistry server for NC

N.C. Institute for Education Policymakers

  • Grant recipient—Public School Forum of North Carolina
  • BWF grants totaling $1,352,433 made from 1996 to 2005
  • Purpose is to build the capacity and the relationships of policymakers including legislators, State Board of Education Members, and media who cover education in areas related to school improvement
  • International Exchange Program developed in 1999
  • First such initiative in U.S., program replicated nationally

Education Future Center

  • Grant recipient—North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics
  • BWF grant of $1,000,000 made in 1996
  • Purpose is to utilize multimedia technologies to interconnect schools across the state to train teachers and share tools and curricula for institutional reform and improvement in science and mathematics education
  • Seven cyber campuses in low wealth counties
  • EFC Partners meet bimonthly and collaborate on program activities

Grassroots Science Museum Collaborative

  • Grant recipient—North Carolina Museum of Life and Science
  • BWF grant of $1,000,000 made in 1999
  • Collaborative established as 501(c)3 organization
  • Purpose is to enhance hands-on science learning across North Carolina through programs and activities offered by more than 20-member science museums
  • First such museum collaborative in U.S.
  • Science museum directors meet regularly and coordinate activities
  • Supported the Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition in China

Project Suc-SEED

  • Grant recipient - Health Research and Education Foundation of CIIT
  • BWF grant of $1,292,511 made in 2006
  • Purpose is to support a statewide program to encourage talented, disadvantaged North Carolina high school students to pursue terminal graduate and professional degrees in chemistry or related science disciplines through a scientific research internship experience
  • Scientists at Duke University, North Carolina State University and UNC-Chapel Hill serve as perceptors
