![]() Science Education Student Science Enrichment Program Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute Program Ninety underrepresented high school students (Native American, Hispanic, and African American) in Henderson, Jackson, and Transylvania counties over a three-year period have the unprecedented opportunity to conduct authentic space science research through visible and radio observations of the Sun. The students expand their scientific knowledge and competence in science with daily scientific observations, creative investigations, and hands-on activities in the Space Science Lab (SSL) located at the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) near Brevard, N.C. The SSL includes Earth/Environmental Science, Physical Science, and Physics Curriculum Goals from the N.C. Standard Course of Study for grades 9-12. With guidance from mentors, the students monitor and study solar activity and construct their own radio telescope so they can continue their research throughout the school year. Additionally, students are linked into an ongoing study of solar activity that involves scientists and amateur astronomers from around the world.
