Program

The Junior Solar Sprint program is an academic year program for sixth through eighth graders, in which teams of students, as part of their learning about alternative and renewable energy sources, build a model solar car and race it against other middle school teams. The Junior Solar Sprint shows middle school teachers and their students the benefits of alternative and renewable energy technologies. Background information is provided to students demonstrating the impact that alternative and renewable energy technologies will have on our daily lives. Science and mathematics curriculum objectives are achieved as students learn about energy and its impact. Engineering principles are reinforced through a hands-on approach that is both fun and motivating. Students, working in teams, are challenged to design and build a model solar racecar. In the spring all participating teams are brought together for a day of exciting racing.
