Student Science Enrichment Program

Duke University
Student Engineers Network: Strengthening Opportunities in Research (SENSOR) Saturday Academy

Program

Quickfacts

Program

The SENSOR Saturday Academy program is a year-round program for twenty ninth grade students. The Academy is designed to reach underrepresented minority students with the aptitude for mathematics and science, but little exposure to scientific research as a career. In addition, the Academy is designed to engage and support these students as a single cohort as they transition from middle school to high school. During three, four-week sessions, students are exposed to inquiry-based learning and research through the study of sensors. Follow-up activities occur throughout the summer. Students are recruited from middle schools in the area that feed Hillside High School and Southern High School in Durham. Students participating in the project are given the opportunity to further their learning by participating in research projects during later programs of the academy.
