Program

The Geosciences in Middle School program is a year-round program designed to reach 200 North Carolina middle school students over three years. The project adopts a collaborative approach in geosciences education between university researchers, middle school teachers, and students. It focuses on geological studies, geospatial techniques, and human impact on the environment in field trips, labs, and career group work. The long-term goal is to prepare students for geosciences and related fields in universities and careers. Students study topics including faults, river landscape, geographic information systems and the global positioning system, and sustainability and conservation issues. Teachers receive in service training and team up with project researchers and geosciences undergraduates to lead field trips. Counselors work with students in groups to explore into geosciences careers and personal development issues. Project activities occur on Saturdays through the fall and spring, and a six-day summer program.
