Program

The O.R.I.E.N.T. Project is an academic year program for middle school students to teach experiential, inquiry-based science performed outside the traditional classroom. The program brings entire classes of public school students to the Betsy Jeff Penn 4-H Education Center for multi-day explorations of outdoor, environmental science. Using Global Positioning System receivers and the practice of “geocaching,” students are challenged to find various treasures in the fields, forests, streams, and lakes of Penn’s campus. Upon reaching each treasure, students must conduct scientific research, analyze data provided on specific topics, perform a mathematical challenge, and/or manipulate scientific data from that site, prior to heading to the next treasure. Scholarships and other school support allow underserved and economically disadvantaged students to participate in this exciting program.
