Program

The Photonics Xplorers program is a year-round program designed to provide 90 ninth and tenth grade students with an opportunity to participate in a two-year continuing learning experience. Through the program students gain a deeper and richer understanding of optics, laser technology, electronics, experimental design, and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers as endeavors that requires resourcefulness, experimentation, and communication skills that are not often addressed in the high school science and mathematics classroom. The fundamental goal is to encourage and prepare these students to take mathematics and science courses throughout high school. To achieve this the program (1) provides inquiry experiences that build on mathematics and science experimentation skills; (2) provides leadership and career counseling to prepare students for high school and STEM careers; (3) reduces isolation often experienced by minority students; and (4) initiate selectronic follow-up sessions to longitudinally follow students’ continued academic excellence.
