Program

Project EXPLORE, a school year program for twenty-five Swain County High School students, introduces participants to different fields of science through a variety of activities including inquiry based lab and field experiments, field trips, contact with scientists and other professionals who work in associated career areas, college visits, museum visits, and community-based service projects. Project EXPLORE takes place during the academic year after school and on weekends. The goals of Project EXPLORE are 1) to improve students’ competence in science, 2) to nurture their enthusiasm for science, and 3) to interest students in pursuing careers in research or other science-related areas. Featured activities include a forensics investigation, a roller coaster physics project, a computer building project, an adventure trek orienteering course, an ozone bio-monitoring garden, an astronomy activity, a robotics project, and a marine biology coastal encounter. Project EXPLORE offers students the opportunity to broaden their horizons and gain skills and knowledge necessary to succeed.
