Sensational Science Saturdays at Cherokee Elementary School
Program
Sensational Science Saturdays at Cherokee Elementary School is a series of five science and mathematics workshops for 48 elementary students per semester during the academic year. The fifth Saturday is a science excursion taking students to a place where scientists work. Each semester, 24 girls and 24 boys from kindergarten through grade five are selected to participate in project teams. Classroom teachers, college interns, parent volunteers, and guest scientists facilitate project-based learning with teams of students in each of the grades. The goal is to create a student-centered, collaborative- based workshop where students develop investigative skills. Students work together to plan and develop strategies for implementing the scientific process by designing and producing reports on their projects and sharing these findings with other classmates and the school community. An additional goal for these students is that they gain knowledge of their Cherokee culture and indigenous technology along with formal scientific knowledge. They learn how their ancestors benefited from having knowledge to live in harmony with nature.
