SSEP Program Description Sensational STEM Project 2012

Sensational STEM Project

The Sensational STEM Project serves 50 low-income, Kindergarten through 5th grade students from two elementary schools in Burke County, North Carolina. The majority of participants are Hispanic, English Language Learners girls. The overarching goal of the Sensational STEM Project is to create young scientists and foster a love of science and mathematics in elementary students. By using a STEM approach, this project expands current teaching models for science and mathematics and incorporates technology and engineering concepts into standardized instruction. A STEM Summer Camp is offered for one week in June and one week in July. School year activities include Saturday STEM Clubs. Instructors are from two participating elementary schools, and the project has a low teacher to student ratio of about 1:8.

Activities to build competence in science and math include hands-on inquiry based projects facilitated through science kits that incorporate the Common Core and NC Essential Standards to help children learn STEM concepts. In order to build understanding and interest in science-related careers, students participate in "Skype a Scientist" days so they can interact with scientists. Students visit the campus of Appalachian State University to build enthusiasm for science and mathematics and foster interest in pursuing college and careers in science-related fields. Students also have the opportunity to visit two museums in North Carolina that feature hands-on activities, including Discovery Place and the Schiele Museum.
