STEM 4 ME! Academy

Program Description

The STEM activities in the science career path development project are under the aegis of our proposed STEM 4 ME! Academy. STEM 4 ME! is Hyde County Schools' vision for an after-school, weekend, and summer STEM program engaging students in a sustained hands-on and minds-on experience of the scientific method.

The STEM 4 ME! Academy's curriculum consists of five main components: 1) opportunities to participate in ongoing daily after school STEM enrichment projects in collaboration with the 21st Century Community Learning Center program; 2) weekly meetings of K-2,3-5,6-8, and 9-12 science clubs; 3) monthly Saturday STEM related field trips or seminars featuring visiting guest scientists leading hands on activities for students and their families; 4) year-long opportunities to work with naturalists at the Swan Quarter and Lake Mattamuskeet Wildlife National Refuge and interpretive rangers and biologists at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore; and 5) participation in eight weeks of summer science education camp staffed by Hyde County Schools faculty members certified in STEM areas, two concurrent eight-week summer camps are offered. The Kindergarten-Grade 5 students participate in a summer science program designed to introduce elements of beginning robotics and environmental sciences. The students attending the Grades 6-12 summer program engage in hands-on STEM projects and week long trips to work with scientists conducting research at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Our partners in the STEM 4 ME! Academy project include the North Carolina State Museum of Natural Sciences, the North Carolina Center for the Advancement for Teaching, Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge Office and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
