PROJECT TITLE: Start Early in Medicine
The Start Early in Medicine (SEIM) initiative engages underrepresented Latino and African American male students (grades 5–12) in hands-on, inquiry-driven exploration of health sciences. Through a series of interactive modules in anatomy, physiology, and physical diagnosis—delivered by PA students, faculty, and community mentors—participants gain early exposure to clinical reasoning, health careers, and public health topics introduced through real-world science and community-based problem-solving. Our work addresses education as a social determinant of health by bridging academic gaps, inspiring career pathways, and building trust in the healthcare system through representation and mentorship. SEIM will continue expanding its reach through interdisciplinary partnerships, including coding, biotechnology, and public health–focused modules. The intended impact is twofold: (1) to cultivate confidence, scientific identity, and academic readiness among participants; and (2) to contribute to a more diverse and equity-focused healthcare pipeline that begins not in college, but in the critical middle and high school years.
