The Burroughs Wellcome Fund is pleased to announce the 13 grant recipients of the 2009 Student Science Enrichment Program awards. Elementary schools were eligible for the first time during this cycle.
The Student Science Enrichment Program supports diverse out-of-school programs with a common goal: to enable primary and secondary students to participate in hands-on scientific activities and pursue inquiry-based exploration. Recipients of the program are selected by an advisory committee and finalized by the BWF Board of Directors.
Since 1996, BWF has invested $20 million in hands-on science education programs across North Carolina reaching 27,000 students through 141 awards to 69 different organizations. Nonprofit institutes such as public and private schools, universities and colleges, museums, and community/science organizations in North Carolina are eligible for SSEP awards.
“We are pleased to provide opportunities for so many students to discover the joys of science in rich learning environments,” said Dr. John Burris, president of BWF. “The award recipients will receive more than just financial support. They will join a network of organizations across the state dedicated to bettering science education in North Carolina.”
