A new article published in Frontiers in Education offers a comprehensive review of classification systems and visualization methods used in reporting doctoral career outcomes. “Making strides in doctoral-level career outcomes reporting: a review of classification and visualization methodologies in graduate education,” brings together the expertise of researchers and career development professionals from across the country.
The work emerged from the Graduate Career Consortium’s (GCC) PhD Outcomes Committee, a collaborative national effort aimed at strengthening data transparency and empowering institutions to track and share meaningful information about the career trajectories of PhD alumni. The article was led by Tammy R. L. Collins, PhD, of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, Rebekah L. Layton, PhD, of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Deepti Ramadoss, PhD, of the University of Pittsburgh, who collectively served as co-first and corresponding authors alongside thirteen additional coauthors from the GCC. The article synthesizes existing taxonomies and data visualization tools, providing a roadmap for institutions seeking to develop or refine their reporting practices. The work is part of a broader effort to improve transparency, inform policy, and better align graduate training with diverse career pathways.
This review is part of the special topic collection, “Building Tomorrow’s Biomedical Workforce.” It aims to serve as a foundational resource for institutions committed to tracking and effectively communicating the career outcomes of PhD alumni, thus demonstrating the impact and reach of graduate training.
