THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL

DIRECTOR: LERHONDA MANIGAULT-BRYANT

PROJECT TITLE: COMMUNIVERSITY STEM ENRICHMENT

Communiversity Youth Program (CYP) was founded and originally led by Black students who wanted to leverage the resources available at Carolina to support the local community. In keeping with this tradition, CYP remains a UNC student-led initiative. The program employs up to 10 UNC work-study students and uses more than 50 UNC student volunteers throughout the school year to manage the daily program operations, including leading enrichment activities, providing homework help, managing classrooms, and mentoring scholars. A dedicated program manager is qualified and employed by the Director of the Stone Center to provide overall program management, training and supervision, partnership development, and administrative oversight of approximately 60 contact hours a year with additional off site field trips at approximately 20 Hours totaling 80 hours of contact. CYP utilizes GSK Science in the Summer (GSK SIS) curricula aligned with NC Department of Public Instruction’s Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS) for onsite activities and has strong partnerships with STEM institutions in North Carolina with rigorous learning standards that also align with NCSCOS for offsite field trips and onsite workshops. The inaugural Black-N-STEM Youth Symposium will be a part of the North Carolina Science Festival to invite Black professionals and students in STEM to participate in a half-day conference. First Friday STEM nights each month and a 1-week summer camp will be used to serve the whole family and prevent learning loss.
