AWARD YEAR: 2023
DIGI-BRIDGE
DIRECTOR: PIPER BARNES
PROJECT TITLE: ADVANCING STEM EDUCATION THROUGH DIGI-BRIDGE PROGRAMMING AND ROBOTICS SQUADS
The Programming and Robotics Squad framework consists of weekly meetings throughout the academic year (September-April), totaling 100 hours of curricular engagement for each of the 15 scholars in two title 1 schools. The curriculum, called "Digi-Bin," focuses on 21st-century skills such as problem-solving, collaboration, and emerging technologies. Students utilize LEGO SPIKE Prime Kits and coding language based on Scratch to build robots and engage in FIRST LEGO League Challenge, where they solve real-world problems and participate in robotics competitions. The curriculum aligns with North Carolina Standard Courses of Study Computer Science Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and 21st Century Learning Standards. The program aims to enhance students' competence in science and mathematics, foster their interest in STEAM disciplines, and expand their educational and career pathways. Role models from the local STEM community provide mentorship and guidance, sharing their stories and experiences with the students. Collaboration with high school-aged robotics teams allows younger students to learn from experienced volunteers. Family engagement is integral to the program, with parents/guardians supporting their children's participation. Digi-Bridge organizes a robotics showcase and STEAM Resource Fair each spring, providing opportunities for students to present their work, explore additional STEAM programs, and connect with other educational partners.
